2016年第40屆Olivier Awards在倫敦時間4/3晚上十點於Royal Opera House圓滿落幕,本屆Olivier的最終得獎名單可說是意料之中,但整個典禮所展現的溫故知新,卻也讓現場觀眾十分享受。
這個晚上的最大贏家是由桑爺作詞、Jonathan Kent執導、Imelda Staunton領軍的【Gypsy】復排製作,共拿下四項大獎,包含音樂劇類最佳女主女配,最佳復排音樂劇,以及最佳燈光設計
這已經是Imelda憑著桑爺的詞曲所拿下的第二座Olivier最佳女主角,在致詞時Imelda相當慧黠地表達了對Stephen Sondheim的感謝,稱其為音樂劇界的Shakespeare,引起現場一片認同的掌聲,我想這樣的評價Sondheim是絕對當之無愧的
過去一年,音樂劇在西區的創作成績差強人意,從今年提名名單裡就看得出來,能夠把四個入圍名單填滿已經相當勉強,也因此【Kinky Boots】與【In the Heighs】這兩齣美國戲的平分秋色也就在預料之中了。
【Kinky Boots】一共拿下音樂劇類最佳男主角、最佳新音樂劇以及最佳服裝設計,Matt Henry在一群白人中脫穎而出拿獎某程度證明了Olivier的公正性,他在【Kinky Boots】的努力與表現絕對壓過同劇組的人氣小生Killian Donnelly,相信Killian自己也明白這點,他不但在紅毯就表示自己最希望Matt拿獎,當得獎名單公布時,Killian更是激動得眼泛淚光
【In the Heights】同樣是來自美國的小品製作,在King’s Cross Theatre裡聰明地運用小劇場的燈光氛圍達到最好的效果,炫目的舞蹈以及嘻哈卻不過份輕浮的譜曲風格更是讓他一舉拿下最佳男配、最佳編舞以及最佳音樂三座獎項
舞台劇類的獎項相對平均,National Theatre旗下的【Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom】, 【Three Days in the Country】以及【People Places & Things】都拿下不少獎,算是最大贏家。【The Father】與【People Places & Things】毫無懸念包辦最佳男女主角,而更具有話題性的是英國傳奇女星Dame
Judi Dench憑藉Sir Kenneth Branagh執導製作的【The Winter’s Tale】摘下個人職業生涯的第8座Olivier Awards,打破了此獎從1976年成立以來40年的歷史紀錄

今年的Olivier頒獎典禮中除了頒發今年倫敦新的戲劇獎之外,也花了不少時間在對過往的致敬上,中場休息前來了一段過往40年Best New Musical得主的組曲串燒,典禮中也對40年間的Best New Play展開片段集錦致敬,最後更將40年來的音樂劇類最佳女主角集合在一起演唱“What I Did For Love”,場面相當溫馨感人。

本屆Olivier 40th雖然不像奧斯卡有那些太明顯的種族或性別議題,但就整個年度的劇場表現來說,能檢討的部分也不少…
首先要再次呼籲SOLT每年必須連帶公布有資格提名的戲劇名單,因為除了SOLT旗下52家會員劇院之外,其餘外圍劇院作品想具備資格都必須另行繳費,但這件事完全是個黑箱作業,除非這些戲最後真的被提名了,否則觀眾永遠搞不清楚某些外圍劇院頗受好評的戲之所以沒上榜到底是真的不受青睞還是僅僅是因為沒有提名資格
另一件值得關注的事是本年度英倫音樂劇幾乎全軍覆沒的表現,關心得獎名單的人可以發現幾乎清一色不是復排就是美國transfer過來的音樂劇,這一年當中不是沒有英倫全新製作嘗試叩門敲磚試水溫,無奈多半在外圍首演時就都被劇評直接判死刑。音樂劇相對於舞台劇是一筆風險更大的投資,尤其在West End中心劇院,他不可能像某些舞台劇那樣設定的檔期就是三個月或六個月,音樂劇從詞曲創作、故事創作、演員選擇上面都是一體成形的挑戰,其中任何一個環節壞了就可能造成整部戲萬劫不復,演出時間不夠長或叫好不叫座也依然會造成血本無歸,不難理解以舞台劇為傳統核心的英國劇場在音樂劇的創作上絕大多數時候無法與美國紐約並肩。
誠如老麥所說,他與韋伯的時代已經結束,而到目前為止在英倫劇場似乎還找不到能夠穩定接棒的創作者,或許大製作的時代已經過去,在市場更加多元國際化,卻也越形艱困的這個年代,英倫音樂劇該如何找到自己與觀眾口味的定位,將是未來十年必須面對的艱難課題
